This photoset was taken in my favorite part of my back yard, in a little triangle of trees where moss grows on the ground and leaves collect in the fall. I wanted to capture the main elements, the tree itself and the moss on the ground below. The first image conveys a feeling of looking up at an infinite sky, and the second focuses in on smaller details of the earth, so together, they create a contrast.
I took these photos at the edge of one of my neighbor's yards because I liked the way the light shone through the trees and created patches on the grass and leaves. I made sure to include the ground, of course, and also some of the trees that were creating the light effect. The images are meant to evoke a very specific nostalgia of stopping on the way up to northern michigan in fall at a foresty rest stop.
These were taken in the trail that leads to one of my favorite places to go during quarantine, the abandoned property in the forest near my house. The actual trail is barred off with a gate, so I use this one, which is natural and used by the wild turkeys that roam nearby. I've found feathers along it on many occasions. The pictures are meant to evoke a sense of exploration and wonder.
These pictures are of a fallen tree near the trail to the abandoned property. Every time I go I have to step over the branch next to the ground. I'm especially proud of the angle I used on the second photo, which is meant to better show the spikey branches along the side of the fallen tree. Together these pictures give you a sense of danger, because you have to be careful when you walk in the woods.
This is actually inside the clearing that is the abandoned property. I decided to take a picture of a couple trees that are particularly prominent in the area, and I especially like the second one with the mossy rock underneath it. Going with the theme of the other photos taken in places around the property, this photo set evokes a sense of peace at finding what you were looking for-- a place to rest. The abandoned property is especially important to me because the first few dates I went on with my girlfriend were here. We went to watch a meteor shower there once.
